What Happened?
Shares of materials and photonics company Coherent (NYSE:COHR) jumped 5.2% in the afternoon session after it successfully demonstrated scalable physical-layer security for artificial intelligence infrastructure developed alongside CUbIQ Technologies.
According to TipRanks, the demonstration presented physical-layer security designed for AI infrastructure. Beyond the work with CUbIQ Technologies, investor interest was also driven by renewed optimism around Coherent’s PhotonLink optics platform following a pullback that occurred after its launch at ECOC 2026. A security proof point tied to AI networking can reinforce confidence in Coherent’s broader optics opportunity after the post-launch dig.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $295.27, up 4.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Coherent’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 85 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 11 days ago when the stock gained 4.1% on the news that the company announced the expansion of its Pluggable Optical Line System portfolio designed to support artificial intelligence datacenter networks. According to a company press release, the expanded Pluggable Optical Line System portfolio features a full C-band, high-power variable-gain amplifier in a compact QSFP form factor. Designed for 800G ZR and ZR+ digital coherent optics, the hardware enables up to 32 Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing wavelengths and handles up to 25.6 terabits per second of AI datacenter traffic.
The systems support optical connections across network distances ranging from 2 kilometers to 200 kilometers, positioning Coherent to capture growing infrastructure demand as tech giants build out massive AI computing facilities.
Coherent is up 52% since the beginning of the year, but at $295.27 per share, it is still trading 30.8% below its 52-week high of $426.89 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coherent’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $4,961.
